What is Sunken Slab -
It's a type of slab, which is provided at some depth below from regular floor level. Also known as Sunk Slab.
Where and Why Sunken Slab is provided -
It's provided in toilets, bathrooms and laundry areas. The purpose of Sunken portion is to fix plumbing system and for waterproofing.
It also reduces noise generated from plumbing during daily use.
Depth of Sunken portion -
Generally, the sunk or depth vary between 150mm to 200mm or more as per requirement.
200mm generally used for toilets and bathrooms.
And it can be 150mm for balcony areas.
In following steps Sunken portion is covered -
Waterproofing - Steps of waterproofing -
Base coat - 25mm thick
Brick bed - 100mm thick
Final coat - 25mm thick
Total will be 150mm, that's why minimum 150mm Sunken depth is adopted.
Plumbing - It's covered in waterproofing.
After all these works flooring is done as usual flooring.
Alternative of Sunken Slab -
1.Raised toilet floor -
It's an alternative of Sunken Slab. In this toilet Slab level will be same as regular Slab level, but for plumbing fitting we have to raise flooring level. All piping work will be covered in this raise portion.
Raised floor reduce toilet headroom or clear height and also it will be inconvenient for elders.

2. Underslung Plumbing or Underfloor Plumbing -
The toilet Slab level will be same as regular Slab level. In this a hole or sleeve have to left during concreting for plumbing system.
Plumbing pipes will be in bottom of Slab, and it's covered by false ceiling. A door trap is provided in false ceiling for maintenance purpose.
It's easy for maintenance without affecting the structure. But for noise reduction due to daily use, we have to provide plumbing fixtures.
Sunken Beam -
It's not a type of beam. In this the beam's depth is reduce from top portion near sunken Slab for drain outlet or down-take.
After this we don't have to put any sleeve. We have much more space compared to sleeve.
Sleeve in concrete -
It's an opening provided in concrete area for passing something in future.
Ex. Toilet outlet for drain, and to drain rainwater from terrace etc.
Its size depends upon requirement. For toilets generally 100mm pvc pipe used as a sleeve, and for individual terrace rainwater we can use 75mm pvc pipe as sleeve.
